Most adult teeth have deep grooves and fissures on the top of them that were formed as a result of formation of the tooth development. These grooves and fissures are places that can harbor bacteria or plaque. If these grooves are not being cleaned properly, dental decay may develop. This is one of the common source of cavities.
Dental sealant is a procedure performed on molars of children at a young age to prevent development of decay. During the procedure, the tooth is properly cleaned, etched with a solution, then sealant material is applied into the deep grooves to cover them up. No anesthetic is necessary for the treatment. The result is a smooth surface on top of the tooth that can be easily cleaned.
